The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith

Beanbag Cinema, 6pm

‘Life’ magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith recorded 4000 hours of audiotape and took over 40,000 photographs in his NYC ‘jazz loft’ home and studio between 1957 and 1965. Using this massive personal archive now housed at the Centre for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, the filmmakers bring Smith’s world at the time to vivid life. Thelonius Monk stops by for three weeks of rehearsals, drummer Ronnie Free gets hooked on hard drugs and Smith begins to record his own phone calls and visits from police as the times change and the ‘60s take hold.
